FAQs

What is Leroc? Is it real jive or something new?

Leroc is a modern, accessible version of jive — not the classic 1950s style. It’s a fusion of jive, latin, and ballroom dance with simpler footwork, so it’s easier to learn and dance to almost any music — pop, rock, disco, swing, or Latin. Think of it as “jive for the modern age.”

Do I need to have danced before?

Nope! Leroc is perfect for complete beginners, or those with two left feet. We rotate partners during classes so you’ll dance with experienced dancers — helping you learn faster — and you can stay with your partner if you prefer. No experience needed.

Do I need special shoes or dance shoes?

Not at all! You can wear regular shoes — just avoid very grippy soles (like certain trainers or rubber-soled shoes). Non-grippy soles are recommended for better movement and safety.

Do I need to book a class?

No, you don’t need to book! Just show up whenever there’s a class running. We run regular drop-in sessions — perfect for beginners who want to give it a go whenever it suits them.

Is there a partner requirement?

Not really. We rotate partners during class — so you’ll dance with several different people. This helps beginners learn faster from more experienced dancers. But if you and your partner want to stay together, that’s totally fine too!

What kind of music do we dance to?

We dance to a wide variety — pop, rock, disco, Latin, swing, and many modern hits. Modern jive is super flexible — you’ll be dancing to what you love!

Is it social? Can I meet new people?

Absolutely! Leroc is a super social, welcoming environment. You’ll meet dancers of all levels — from beginners to advanced — and you’ll be dancing with many different partners during class and freestyle. It’s like a dance party with learning!

What’s the “freestyle” session?

After the class, we have a freestyle session — where you can dance to the music, practice your moves, and have fun. This really is the best way to learn — and it’s super fun! You can dance with other dancers in the room, including crew members and the teacher!

What if I’m nervous or shy?

Totally normal! We’re a friendly, encouraging space. Our instructors and coaches are trained to help beginners feel confident — and you’ll dance with many experienced dancers who’ll guide you. Plus, everyone’s learning — no pressure to be perfect!

Do I need to be fit or athletic?

You don’t need to be a fitness guru — but a reasonable level of fitness helps you enjoy the class and keep up with the movement. If you’re unsure whether you’re ready, it’s always a good idea to check with your GP before joining. We want you to dance safely and comfortably!

What should I wear?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that allow you to move. No special costume needed! Just bring yourself, a smile, and a willingness to dance.

What is the cost of Leroc classes?

The normal admission fee for classes is £8. On your first visit there is also a one-off fee of £2 for your membership card. It’s seriously great value for a fun, social, and energizing night out! You can drop in anytime — no booking required — and you’ll get to dance, meet new people, and feel amazing. Plus, there are many health benefits to dancing such as fitness, mental health, and mood.

Who teaches the classes?

Our classes are taught by qualified UKA-affiliated instructors — with experience in modern jive. We also have friendly coaches who’ll help beginners on their first few nights — so you’ll feel supported every step of the way.

What if I don’t like it?

You won't know if you'll like it unless you try it! You could also ask, what if I DO like it - or love it!?? If there's something you're not sure about, please ask us and we'll try to help. We want you to feel confident and happy — but there's no pressure to stay. What do you have to lose - apart from the price of admission? Sorry, we do not offer refunds.

Where do I find class schedules?

Check our website’s Classes or Freestyles page for live class times, locations, and upcoming events. We run classes weekly — and you can just show up whenever you’re ready!

What’s the minimum age to join Leroc?

We welcome dancers aged 18 and over. Leroc is designed for adults who want to learn modern jive — whether you’re 18, 30, 40, or 60 plus — you’re welcome to join! We’re not a kids’ or teen dance studio — but we’re a fun, social, adult-friendly space where you can learn, dance, and connect with others.

Are there any age restrictions for the classes?

Yes — we only accept dancers 18 years and older. This is to ensure a safe, mature, and appropriate environment for all participants. We don’t offer classes for children or teens — but if you’re 18+, you’re ready to groove!

Can older adults (e.g., 50s, 60s) join?

Absolutely! Modern jive (Leroc) is perfect for people of all ages — including seniors. The footwork is simpler than classic jive, and we move at a comfortable pace. Many of our dancers are in their 50s, 60s, and beyond — and they’re having a blast!

Is there a maximum age limit?

No — there’s no age cap. Whether you’re 18 or 80, you’re welcome to join — as long as you’re 18+, and you have a reasonable level of fitness to help you enjoy the class and keep up with the movement. If you’re unsure, check with your GP before joining. We want you to dance safely and comfortably!

💡 Bonus Tip for Beginners:

Start with just one class — no pressure to commit. You’ll quickly feel the rhythm, meet new people, and fall in love with the movement. And if you’re not sure? Ask — our instructors are happy to help you get started!
