Do You Need a Partner to Take Leroc Dance Classes?

One of the most common questions we hear from people thinking about trying Leroc dance classes is: “Do I need to bring a partner?”
The short answer is no - you don’t need a partner to start Leroc. And for many dancers, coming on your own is actually one of the best ways to learn.

That said, you’re very welcome to attend with a partner if you’d like. Whether it’s a friend, spouse, colleague, or someone you’ve persuaded to give it a go, Leroc classes are designed to be flexible, inclusive, and enjoyable for everyone.

Leroc Classes Are Designed for Everyone

Leroc (also known as Modern Jive) is a highly social dance, and most classes are structured around partner rotation. This means that during the class, you regularly change partners so you can dance with lots of different people.

Because of this format, turning up solo is completely normal - in fact, many people do. You won't be left standing on the sidelines, and our teachers make sure the class stays balanced and welcoming.

If you do come with a partner, you can still rotate with the group, or you can choose to stay together if that feels more comfortable. There’s no pressure either way.

Why Partner Rotation Is Encouraged

While it’s always your choice, we actively encourage partner rotation in Leroc classes - and for good reason.

You’ll learn faster.
Dancing with different partners helps you adapt more quickly. Leaders learn how to communicate movements clearly, and followers learn how to respond to a variety of styles. This accelerates learning far more than repeating the same steps with the same person every time.

You’ll become a better social dancer.
Leroc is a social dance, often enjoyed at parties, clubs, and dance events. Rotating partners in class prepares you for real social dancing, where you’ll dance with many different people - not just one.

It’s more social and more fun.
Meeting new people is a huge part of the Leroc experience. Rotating partners helps break the ice, builds confidence, and creates a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where everyone feels included.

You avoid learning limitations.
When two beginners only dance with each other, it can be harder to notice and correct mistakes. Dancing with more experienced partners (and vice versa) gives you clearer feedback through movement and helps everyone progress more smoothly.

What If You Come as a Couple?

If you attend Leroc classes as a couple and prefer to stay together, that’s absolutely fine. Many couples start this way, especially in the early weeks, and our instructors will always respect your preference.

However, many couples eventually choose to rotate once they feel more comfortable - often because they notice how much faster they improve and how much more confident they feel on the dance floor.

So… Partner or No Partner?

To sum it up:

  1. You do not need a partner to take Leroc dance classes
  2. You’re welcome to come with a partner if you wish
  3. Partner rotation is encouraged because it helps you learn faster, socialise more, and have more fun
  4. Couples can stay together if they prefer, especially at the start

Whether you come solo or with someone else, Leroc classes are designed to help you relax, learn, and enjoy dancing from your very first lesson. All you really need to bring is a willingness to have a go - and maybe a smile. 😊
